Shaun Rose

Historic Preservation Coordinator, City of Montgomery, AL

Shaun Rose is the Historic Preservation Coordinator for the City of Montgomery, AL. His duties relate to the regulation of the City’s Historic Preservation Program. He has a B.A. in History from Augusta University, an M.A. in Public History from Colorado State University; and has previously worked as a Cultural Resource Technician and Architectural Historian. Mr. Rose’s responsibilities include processing applications for historic designation and alterations to historic properties for review, respectively, by the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) and Architectural Review Board (ARB), leading televised monthly HPC and ARB meetings, and communicating with citizens to answer questions regarding historic preservation. Ms. Valerie Smedley will discuss the Long Civil Rights Movement (1930s-present) in Montgomery through the lens of her experience as a small business owner in historic Centennial Hill. Ms. Smedley will discuss what motivated her to open a souvenir shop, Tours of Montgomery, just across the street from the historic Ben Moore Hotel; how meaningful it is to have become a trusted pillar of the local community; and lessons she has learned and taught others while leading walking tours and sharing invaluable local knowledge with tourists from near and far.
